Olin Frederick has become a distributor of this story of a missionary doctor in China during the warlord and Kuomintang era of the 20th Century. Lois Pendleton, born of a line of New England sea captains and adventurers, continues her family achievements after medical school by going to serve as a surgeon in China. Hers is a story of the challenge of floods, famine, disease and dust storms in Shantung Province. It is also a story of romance. She fell in love with a American engineer responsible for the harnessing of the Yellow River, another adventurer whose story became part of Lois’ life. They went on possibly the most rash and risky honeymoon ever undertaken by an American couple. As a mother raising four children she continued her work and herfamily joined the adventure. Her biographer is her daughter who followed her into medicine and became president of The American Medical Women’s Association and an active leader for resolution of the American healthcare crisis.
