A novel by Tom LeClair about Kurds attempting to escape the police state realities of eastern Turkey. It
makes the reader sensitive to this ethnic Muslim people with democratic traditions who had semi-autonomy in the Ottoman Empire. Their
province of Kurdistan, however, was divided among four countries on the map tables in Europe by the victors in World War I leaving them stateless. It also takes readers into the workings of the United Nations High Commission on Refugees and those that it serves or is supposed to. .
